Cherkley campaigners vow to fight on after Government fails to call-in MVDC decision

Campaigners against a golf and leisure development at Cherkley Court near Leatherhead have vowed to continue their fight after the Government decided not to authorize a planning inquiry.

Members of CPRE Surrey Branch said they were “disappointed but not entirely surprised” that the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Mr Eric Pickles, had declined to ‘call in’ a decision by Mole Valley councillors in favour of the development.

CPRE Surrey Branch has expressed “disappointment and alarm” at the vote by Mole Valley District Council’s Development Control Committee to allow the development of a golf and leisure complex at Cherkley Court, Leatherhead, the former home of Lord Beaverbrook. During the 2-hour debate at the Committee’s meeting on May 2, a succession of Councillors had cited the opposition of CPRE and other conservation groups to the proposals for the golf and leisure development at Cherkley. Enthusiastic backing for Surrey Hills AONB boundary review

Members of the Surrey Branch of CPRE have thrown their weight behind Natural England’s decision to review the boundaries of the county’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).   Tim Harrold, Vice-President of CPRE Surrey, told a packed meeting of CPRE members that this preliminary review represented “a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the protection afforded some of the most attractive countryside in Surrey.”   The review will look at the possibility of expanding the nationally designated Surrey Hills AONB to include the locally designated Areas of Great Landscape Value (AGLV). Campaigners welcome first steps towards enlargement of AONB

The Surrey Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has welcomed the prospect of a widening of the boundaries of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which would bring more of Surrey ’s countryside within the protected area.   Natural England , the official body that advises the Government on protected landscapes such as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Parks, has written to the Board of the Surrey Hills AONB indicating that it wishes to begin preliminary work on boundary changes.
