Surrey has more Green Belt countryside and green space than any other county. Much of it is also in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB), a patchwork of countryside stretching across the county from Farnham in the west to Oxted in the east, and which includes the highest point in southeast England – Leith Hill – and famous beauty spots such as Box Hill, the Hogs Back, and the Devil’s Punch Bowl.

‘Leafy Surrey’ is also England’s most heavily wooded county, with woodland covering a fifth of the county. A quarter of these woods are recorded as ancient woodland, areas rich in wildlife, that have been an unchanging part of the English landscape for centuries. We offer extensive walking routes and cycle trails, open commons, sunken lanes, breathtaking views and picturesque market towns and villages. CPRE works to ensure that this amazing countryside will continue to be protected, so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.
